What got you hooked?

Specifically what book got you hooked? That is what the First Book Campaign is all about. First book wants to know what got you hooked, and if you tell them - they will donate 50,000 books to the state of your choice.
"Past winners include Oklahoma in 2007 and Kentucky in 2008,
with each state receiving 50,000 new books for children in need."
All you have to do is go to their website and vote for the state of your choice by September 30, 2009. You don't have to say which book got you hooked, but they are keeping track and will announce which books were the best "hookers." (disclaimer: I just wanted to share this website because it is a great cause and I want North Carolina to get 50,000 books - no one gave me anything to do this)
For me it was The Polar Express. The pictures seemed to come alive and the words made me feel like I was on the train going to the north pole. This was the first time I realized books could take me places. Nathaniel's favorite book as a young one was The Very Hungry Caterpillar. He loved to have me read it over and over. Tyler was a big fan of Where the Wild Things Are. I guess some books never go out of style. These days they are reading every book they can get their hands on.
What book got you hooked?
"The Polar Express is about faith, and the power of imagination to sustain faith. It's also about the desire to reside in a world where magic can happen, the kind of world we all believed in as children, but one that disappears as we grow older." ~Chris Van Allsburg

  1. What a great campaign! I've been racking my brain trying to think of what book turned me into the book enthusiast I am now, and honestly I cannot remember! What does that mean?

I'll share instead my favorite book when I was in primary and elementary school, or rather series of books, Ramona Quimby by Beverly Cleary. I loved all of these particularly, Ramona Age 8 and Ramona Forever, but I read all of them numerous times! In fact I read all the books Beverly Cleary wrote. She had a great nack for writing funny stories while blending in situations kids at that age have to encounter, like a parent losing a job, or having to go to a babysitter's house after school that was heinous because your mom had to go back to work, which left no one at home after school. Did that sentence make sense?

Anyway, another great, thought provoking post. Love it!
